Trump welcomes Vietnam leader to White House

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on the visit to the White House by Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc (all times local):

3:50 p.m.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc (nuh-WEE’-ihn SOO’-an FOOK) says the U.S. and Vietnam have overcome “significant upheavals” in relations to become “comprehensive partners.”
Phuc recalls speaking by telephone with President Donald Trump in December before Trump took office, and exchanging letters.
He says he was impressed by Trump’s “openness and friendliness” and expresses

confidence their talks Wednesday will be “equally candid and open.”
Phuc is the first Southeast Asian leader to visit the White House.
Trump says they’ll discuss important topics, including trade. He says Vietnam has made a billion-dollar order that will mean jobs for the U.S. and great equipment for Vietnam.
He has not said what the order was for.

President Donald Trump says he plans to discuss trade and North Korea with the prime minister of Vietnam.
Trump welcomed Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc (nuh-WEE’-ihn SOO’-an FOOK) to the Oval Office Wednesday.
Trump says the prime minister has done a “spectacular job.” He adds, “We have many things to talk about and we look forward to being together.”
Trump is due to travel to Vietnam to attend an Asia-Pacific economic summit in November.

Vietnam had stood to be a prime beneficiary of the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade agreement negotiated under Obama administration.
Trump withdrew the U.S. from that agreement within days of taking office, and he’s is concerned over the $32 billion trade deficit with Vietnam, America’s sixth-largest.
